  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Date:  18-5-2015
Location:  Wilfred’s Rock
Water Temperature: 15.6C
Depth: 17.1m
Visibility: 5m
Number of Sharks: 22
Conditions:  A calm morning but wind started to pick up as we headed back to the
harbor

Where to begin.. boy, today was FINtastic. It was an early morning start today as we launched from Kleinbaai harbor at 7 am. After breakfast and waking up having some coffee we went down to the harbor and watched the sunrise as we were driving to our dive site, Wilfred’s rock. It seemed that the shark were around for breakfast as well because we soon spotted our first shark. The sharks were active from the beginning, ambushing the bait and decoy handlers until a shark breached completely right in front of the decoy handler, only 2 meters away from the boat! As it plunged back into the water the splash it created got Gerald soaked as he was sitting on a platform to get some video footage of the sharks gliding through the water. I have to admit, I was too slow to get a picture of the breach but there were a few lucky people that did get it on camera. The sharks kept on coming as time progressed and we managed to see 22 different sharks in total! The numbers of sharks we have seen the last few days have been really high so hopefully they will stay like that as long as possible so that as many people can enjoy their presence around the boat.
